What is Vyke IP?

Vyke IP is an internet telephony service which allows a user to make calls over the internet using a an ATA device (Analogue Telephone Adaptor). Most ATA devices using SIP and/or IAX that are available in the marketplace will work with Vyke. The ATA device must be connected to the internet and most are easily configured to the Vyke service (see FAQ section 5).

Why should I use Vyke IP?

Vyke IP is a cost effective way to make calls from anywhere you have an internet connection. Once an ATA device (SIP or IAX) is configured with your Vyke SIP/IAX username and password, it can be used to call anywhere in the world at extremely low rates (see rates section on Vyke merchant site for more information). If you have certain Nokia mobile handsets, these can also be configured to work as a SIP ATA device, see more under products page, Vyke Mobile IP.

What is VoIP?

VoIP is 'Voice over Internet Protocol', often referred to as IP telephony is a way of routing a voice conversation over the internet or through an IP based network. It is quite simply a way of utilizing the Internet for telephone conversations. The primary motivations for doing so are cost and convenience as VoIP is significantly less expensive than typical telephone long distance calls.

How does Vyke IP work?

In order to use Vyke IP, you need to sign-up with Vyke! Once you have signed up and bought Vyke Credits, you fill in your SIP/IAX Vyke account details found on the Vyke IP pages. Make sure your device is connected to the internet and make calls directly from your device to any phone number in the world at greatly reduced rates.

What do I need in order to get started with Vyke IP

In order to get started with Vyke IP you need a Vyke account and to complete registration on Vyke IP pages for a Vyke IP account. Furthermore, you need a SIP or IAX ATA device. The device must be connected to a broadband line and you must enter the specific Vyke account information into your ATA device according to the device specification. Once this is done, you should be able to dial any phone number in the world at greatly reduced rates.

How do I check my balance from my device?

When your ATA device is connected you can dial 001# and you will hear your current balance.

Which IP devices can I use?

You can use most ATA devices available in the market as long as it is not locked to another VoIP provider.

What is SIP?

SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol. In IP and traditional telephony, there is a clear distinction between two different phases of a voice call. The first phase is "call setup," and makes two telephones connect so one may talk to each other. Once the call has been setup, the phones enter a "data transfer" phase using an entirely different family of protocols to actually move the voice packets between the two phones. In the VoIP world, SIP is a call setup protocol that operates on the application layer.

What is IAX?

IAX is the Inter-Asterisk eXchange protocol used by Asterisk, an open source PBX server from Digium. In the VoIP world, IAX is a call setup protocol that operates on the application layer.

What is QOS?

QoS stands for “Quality of Service”. Some broadband connections may have less than desirable quality. Where IP packets are lost or delayed at any point in the network between VoIP users, there will be a momentary drop-out of voice. This is more noticeable in highly congested networks and/or where there is long distances and/or interworking between end points. “REF: Wikipedia”. This can often be solved by marking the QOS button in the configuration of an ATA device. NOTE: In order to get maximum effect of QoS he device should be connected directly to the modem and not via a hub or secondary router.

Both me and my friend have Vyke IP services can we call each other for free?

If you are both using the SIP protocol you may talk to each other. By entering 10* and your friends Vyke username you can talk for free to each other as long as you are both online.

Do you support dial-up SIP/IAX devices?

Vyke supports this as well, however, please refer to the user manual of your device for configuration. However, same configurations for Vyke service as described in section seven above applies.

Which CODEC do I use?

Vyke supports multiple CODEC’S, but you should use G729 or g711. If this is not available in your device then use the following in this order: ULAW, GSM.

I get an error code when I try to make a call!

The Vyke service will give various error codes in the event of a problem. If the problem persists please contact Vyke Support, describing your error code.

What is the difference between an ATA and a SIP device?

The main difference between SIP and IAX is the communication protocol. Vyke IP accounts can be used for both types.

Standard settings for Vyke IP

The hash key in the end of a number tells the Vyke server that you have entered all the digits in a telephone numbers and sends the call to the server faster. It is not needed, but can sometime server to get the call set-up faster.
